6 brilliant patches for making dollhouse miniature quilts

I'm often asked what size patches I use to make my intricate dollhouse miniature quilts. So here's a quick guide to my favourite patches that work brilliantly in 1:12 scale.

Hexies

Hexies - my first love! There's a reason a lot of quilters love hexies. They're versatile, no acute angles so the back of your quilt is tidy, and they look brilliant in miniature. And what's more, they're not super tricky to sew if you know how. I go into it in detail in my hexie quilt tutorial here.

Half inch hexie - the half inch refers to the side measurement, not the distance across.

Quarter inch hexie are my favourite because of the brilliant detail they bring to a dollhouse quilt.

Squares

Traditional, versatile and while some clever folk do machine sew these for speed, I find it much more relaxing to hand sew with paper templates, and the precise results are unbeatable! I explain it much better in my square quilt tutorial here.

Beginners, start with one inch squares:

Three quarter inch squares give a more detailed look:

Half inch squares add lots of lovely detail to your dollhouse scene, and work well for cushions too!

Bonus squares: Occaisionally I make a quilt featuring quarter inch squares, but that is rare. That's because even for a seasoned micro-patchworker like me, these are DIFFICULT and the slowest thing ever. Still the finished dollhouse quilt is worth the effort, when I can motivate myself enough to make one!

Quarter inch strips - aka the Log Cabin

I have recently gotten big into log cabins for 1:12 dollhouse miniature quilts. There are lots of versatile ways to achieve lovely detail in miniature. This tutorial is the easiest version of a log cabin quilt I make - you'll need a sewing machine for this one!

I hope this has inspired you to give mini sewing a go in your dollhouse.

Unsure where to start?

As well as digital tutorials, I also make kits that include all the fabric you'll need to create your own miniature masterpiece.

Please do share your creations, I love to see them!
